Lead Software Engineer – Race Engineering

The Drone Racing League (DRL) is the premier, global drone-racing circuit and producer of world-class sports content. As a futuristic sport that blurs the line between the real and the digital, we get to race in the most legendary locations around the globe and immerse fans into video-game-inspired courses.

We are looking for an experienced full stack software Engineer with a solid foundational knowledge of software engineering principles and best practices, who can look outside the box and elevate the quality of software development of their team. The person stepping into this position will play a critical role in DRL’s race management and sports data systems, as well as lead the “Timing and Scoring” team – both during our R&D phases as well as during our live on-site races.

What You’ll Do:

• Lead architecture design and software development of our RaceStack (collection of systems that enable us to have drone races)
• Lead the “Timing and Scoring” team of developers (team that owns the “RaceStack”)
• Support the deployment and operation of the RaceStack during our live drone races and other events as they arise – this involves travel
• Collaborate across teams and departments (and with external collaborators) to achieve the best outcomes 

Who You Are:

• You are a great teammate, you love working with people and are obsessed with technology
• You have plenty of experience in the field (typically 5+ years)
• You are fluent in JavaScripts and its’ flavors
• You know server side and client side (Node, React, etc.)
• You know at least one additional top tier programming language (could be any modern language including but not limited to Python, Java, C++, C#, Rust, Go)
• You have experience working with databases (MySQL, Mongo, …)
• You are familiar with modern methodologies such as Agile
• You know modern best practices such as code reviews, GIT source control with pull requests, etc)
• You can navigate a fast paced environment. We are a startup, and a unique one, things tend to happen fast and we move together quickly to accomplish our goals.
• You are comfortable with occasional required travel (approximately 10% over the course of a calendar year)

Optional Skills:

• AWS/GCP experience
• Docker/K8s experience

The salary range for this role is $130,000-$185,000. Actual total compensation packages offered to candidates within that range are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, years and depth of experience, certifications, and the candidate’s specific location.
